Boys Basketball Coaching Staff

Curtis Gilleylen has never backed down from a challenge in his entire career in athletics as a player or a coach.

That includes a major challenge like the one he faced just this past high school basketball season in which he stepped in to coach the boys team at Columbia High School following an abrupt late-season coaching change after guiding the Eagles girls program the entire season.

While the 38-year-old Flint, Mich., native said he wouldn’t hesitate to answer a call like that again, he does admit he is looking forward to holding just one job at a time as the new boys varsity basketball coach at Meadowcreek, a job with its own challenges.

“That was definitely an experience,” Gilleylen said of coaching the Columbia boys to the Class AAAA Sweet 16 this past spring, in addition to leading the girls team to a 13-8 record. “But I think I’m more effective at just one job. But those two weeks with the boys team renewed my spark. We did a lot in just two weeks. We were a .500 team (to that point), and (the players) responded.”
