KENNESAW — Meadowcreek defeated Kennesaw Mountain 3-2 in the second round of the Class AAAAAAA state tournament, a game ultimately decided in the last three minutes.
“I am very proud of the way we played. This was a great team,” Meadowcreek coach Tyler LaFleur said. “They faced the adversity of a comeback, they rose above it and they were able to finish this off. This is our 14th win of the season, the most in school history, and this is furthest we have ever been in the playoffs.”
With three minutes left in the game, Kennesaw Mountain’s Spencer Comstock took the ball up the field. A collision between with Meadowcreek’s goalkeeper Jose Alvarado had the ball rolling into the open. Eddie Reyes followed the whole play and found himself all alone in front to tie the game 2-2.
Both teams testing the tie on the counterattack. With 40 seconds left, Kennesaw Mountain’s Erik Silvano slid too late and committed a foul inside the box, which gave Meadowcreek a penalty shot.
